Vasectomy

When you’re ready to take control of your contraception options, Avant offers in-office vasectomies with a focus on minimizing the risks of any post-vasectomy pain.

When the word ‘contraception’ is used, most people think of birth control pills or condoms. However, vasectomies have become increasingly popular as a method of prophylaxis, especially now that the procedures can be done with little discomfort, downtime, or recovery time.

Since vasectomies first entered the scene, some men have experienced post-vasectomy pain, due to the inherent invasiveness of the original, more traditional, procedure. Over time, however, technology and experience has been refined and vasectomies – now a common form of contraception – can be done with less risk.

At Avant Concierge Urology, as with most of our surgical procedures, vasectomies can be performed in-office under IV sedation, and we do not use a scalpel to perform the procedure. Additionally, as a world-renowned expert on the treatment of groin and testicular pain, Avant’s Medical Director Dr. Sijo Parekattil approaches vasectomies with several precautions to minimize the risks of a patient experiencing post-vasectomy pain syndrome (PVPS), including special cord blocks that help alleviate the risk of post-surgical pain.

What to Expect During a Vasectomy

A vasectomy can be performed in-office at Avant Concierge Urology as a same-day, outpatient procedure. You’ll consult with your urologist in advance to discuss how to prepare for the procedure (i.e. which medications you can / cannot take, when to stop eating before surgery, etc.) You can expect to receive a document from Avant Concierge Urology with pre-surgery precautions and procedures.

On the day of your vasectomy, you will want to dress comfortably in loose clothing before the procedure. Please wear a jock support or tight briefs for the procedure.  Dr. Parekattil and the team at Avant will make sure you’re comfortable, will use IV sedation, and will then perform the procedure. In total, your office visit for the procedure should last approximately an hour, with only 15 – 30 minutes for the actual vasectomy.

As stated above, Dr. Parekattil is known throughout the world for his pioneering work in testicular and groin pain management, having researched and discovered a nerve-related cause for the pain. Using this knowledge, he has developed pain block techniques that can be used immediately prior to and after vasectomies to ensure the patient is as comfortable as possible.

You’ll be required to have someone to drive you home from Avant Concierge Urology following the procedure (read more about Avant’s options for hiring a patient chaperone here).

Before leaving, you will receive some post-operative instructions from the team at Avant Concierge Urology, with guidance on how to best care for yourself post-op. Expect a consultation follow-up with Dr. Parekattil or another member of the medical team at Avant Concierge Urology following your procedure. While most men feel fine immediately after the procedure, it is recommended that you take off work for 2 business days. You should be able to resume all of your regular activities within 4 – 6 weeks. Sexual function is typically not impacted by a vasectomy procedure.
