Chronic Prostatitis
As many may know, the prostate is a small gland located below the bladder in males. It surrounds the urethra, produces a small amount of seminal fluid, and is important for keeping the pH balance of semen.
There is a condition known as chronic prostatitis, however, which involves inflammation of the prostate that lasts for at least 3 months. Prostatitis may be caused by a bacterial infection, but in some cases, the cause may just be unknown.
There are two types of chronic prostatitis, which differ by the cause of the condition. The first is chronic bacterial prostatitis, which is caused by a bacterial infection. This type of prostatitis can affect men of any age but is typically seen more often in younger and middle-aged men. The second type is chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), which produces similar symptoms to the bacterial form of the condition, but its causes are unknown. CP/CPPS is the more common type of chronic prostatitis. When chronic prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics; however, when the cause is unknown, it may be necessary to just treat the symptoms.
The symptoms of both forms of prostatitis usually start out mild and build in intensity. They include a constant urge to urinate; burning when urinating; difficulty starting to urinate followed by an uneven flow; blood in the urine; the feeling as if the bladder isn’t fully emptied after going to the bathroom; painful ejaculation; pain in lower back, lower abdomen, above the pubic area, as well as between the testicles and anus. Bacterial prostatitis may also be accompanied by fever or chills.
